In week two students, explored the Inuit culture and learned about rock sculptures. Then, students were given rocks and were able to create their own rock sculptures and document their work by taking pictures of Ipads.
Students creating their rock sculptures:
Then we learned about Inuit rock carvings and students carved animals out of bars of soap using various tools such as spoons, Popsicle sticks, and clay tools.
Continuing the Lesson at Home:
Children can find rocks in their home or yard and create their own natural sculptures both indoors and outdoors. We incorporated various types of rocks, which made the sculptures more interesting. Soap sculptures can easily be created at home by using any bar of body soap and popsicle sticks or spoons as carving tools. We provided students with paper templates of animal shapes to trace on their soap bars to begin.
